About me

I write bleakly funny plays and short fiction about isolation and community, driven by characters on the edges of social codes. I’m passionate about exploring forms that engage with audiences in different ways.

Theatre

Commissions include Meeting Myself Coming Back (Soho Theatre. British Theatre Guide Highlight of the Year, Sunday Times Critic’s Choice and discussed in Rewriting the Nation: British Theatre Today by Aleks Sierz); Caution! Trousers (Alan Ayckbourn, SJT); Talking for England (Ustinov Theatre Bath) and My Balloon Beats Your Astronaut (Papatango TC at Tristan Bates Theatre).

I've received ACE Awards for playwriting and have had residencies at Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, National Theatre London and RADA for WGGB.

Short fiction

Two of my stories  have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 (in different years) live from Bath Festival. Most recently I received the Society of Authors’ Arthur Welton Award and Foundation Grant and was shortlisted for the Tom-Gallon Trust Award. I won third prize in the Costa Short Story Awards and The London Magazine Short Story Prize. Longlists include the BBC National Short Story Award, Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and UEA New Forms Award, and I was runner-up in the Bridport Prize and highly commended for the Manchester Fiction Prize. I won the Cinnamon Press Award, Words & Women Award and Frome Festival Prize. My work is published by Oberon Books, The London Magazine, Bristol Prize, Bridport Prize, Brick Lane, Words & Women Compendium and Splash of Ink. I have the title piece in Cinnamon Press’s Patria and Other Stories.

Up next is a full-length multi-form piece, full of strange and unusual Hoodness.
