About me

As a writer and dramatherapist, I draw inspiration from the real lives and experiences of the people I meet—whether in prisons, hospitals, schools, or community settings. Comedy allows me to take characters out of their familiar environments and place them in new, unexpected environments and situations. Through this, I explore relationships, identity, and the absurdity of human experience, always with empathy and humour.
As a working-class, Northern woman, it’s important to me that my voice and the voices of my community are represented through my work. My writing has often been described as “very Northern,” and I embrace that response. The humour, the struggles, the resilience—it’s all a part of who we are. With new writing initiatives like Hartlepool Studios on the horizon, I’m determined to use my craft to help build upon the strong, but still underrepresented, Northern talent emerging in British comedy. The North is on the rise, and I want to be part of that change, ensuring that our stories—often overlooked—are heard and celebrated.
Comedy in particular provides relief from the weight of working in spaces that deal with trauma, such as the Criminal Justice System and homelessness services. It offers a vital escape from the seriousness of the world and provides a much-needed platform to laugh, reflect, and heal. By using humour, I can explore the nuances of human relationships and identity, always with an eye toward empathy and understanding. It’s through this lens that I’ve created works like Toast, Queen of the Quack, and We Made a Pact, all of which tackle serious issues through the lens of comedy. Comedy can be both a tool for levity and a powerful medium for social commentary.
What I hope to achieve through support from papatango is two-fold: first, the opportunity to refine my craft as a writer, and second, to be part of a creative community that can help elevate Northern voices in theatre. I’ve had success with commissions in health and justice services, but I’m now eager to broaden my scope, deepen my skills, and learn from industry professionals who share my passion for storytelling.
