About me

Hi! I am a Welsh writer for theatre and TV, currently based in London.

This year, I'll be taking part in the Royal Court's Introduction to Playwriting Course. In 2022, I was one of the 503Five at Theatre503, where I wrote my play GENESIS. This play was recently nominated for the George Devine Award.

My debut play EXISTENTIAL FISH AND DREAD toured from London to Cardiff and Exeter in 2021-2022. My second play, THE GHOST OF YOU, placed in the top 10% of a record 5167 submissions to BBC Script Room 2021 and was long-listed for development at the Traverse. An extract of this play was recently selected for performance at The Other Palace, as part of a scratch night programmed by Theatre Royal Haymarket Masterclass Theatre Trust. I was Chippy Lane Productions’ Writing Apprentice to BAFTA-winning writer Alan Harris, a position funded by Arts Council Wales. My previous theatre credits include short plays VERA JONES at The Old Red Lion and HOW LOAN CAN YOU GO? at The Pleasance, Islington.

For TV, I wrote episode 4 of series 3 of BEYOND PARADISE (BBC 1), and I previously worked in the writers’ room for series 2 of THE PACT (BBC 1). I am currently developing original TV series for ITV, S4C, Objective Fiction, Esmerelda Pictures, Tall Story Pictures and BYO Films.

Reviews:

The Reviews Hub: “Charming, slickly paced… the exploration of big ideas – much like this play – is worthwhile in itself.”
https://www.thereviewshub.com/existential-fish-dread-cockpit-theatre-london/

London Pub Theatres: “Clever, moving and well-performed… Reed explains complex particle physics, through Ellie, in a way that makes the facts both understandable and sufficiently bewildering. Forty-five minutes seems to be a great length for a play designed to inspire audience discussion and exploration.”

Dress Circle Reviews: “Well-written funny and moving… The audience were captivated throughout. The storytelling from writer Martha Reed is what makes it so strong. It’s a great play that deserves a wide audience.”

GENESIS

Synopsis:

Talwyn Evans has worked his whole life to protect his Valley. By building a small empire of coal-burning factories, he’s centralised and stabilised the industry in his community, creating an infrastructure strong enough to sustain the town. His workers are paid fairly, and he’s instilled in his family the importance of being the hand that provides.

But when Talwyn pulls his son out of school to build a third and final factory, the heirloom that will secure his legacy, things start to go wrong. The sky grows thick with smoke and the rain becomes relentless. Insistent that he’s offsetting the emissions, Talwyn denies any responsibility for the changing climate. But when his elderly father becomes convinced that God has instructed him to build an ark to protect the righteous from an imminent flood, his family begin to doubt him. Is this just normal Valley rain? Or are they being punished for their pursuit of wealth?
