About me

Screenwriter and playwright based in the South East. Interested in developing female-led narratives with complex characters at the centre. Keen to meet other writers and directors to collaborate with. I have two plays at the rehearsal stage. The first, a one-act monologue Just Stop!, is being developed with Soho Theatre. I am looking for a director to help develop my full-length play, Earth, Earth. Mother, Mother.

My Plays

Earth, Earth. Mother, Mother

Synopsis:

A dark comedy about deep love, profound loss, and finding your way back. The action takes place in four locations within a medieval village: the woods, the Black family home, the local tearooms and the hospital. The village is a mysterious, often mystical place, known for its longstanding ties with Paganism and Pagan traditions - a world our protagonist Betty finds herself increasingly drawn to. We view the story through three-acts, from two sides. First, through the eyes of Betty, we experience her losses and her profoundly personal journey. In the second act, Betty's husband Richard shows us what it is like for a partner on the other side of someone's pain. The third act unites the pair, as they muddle through new health developments and challenges together. So often, the experiences that define our lives are shared, intrinsically linked to another's. Earth Earth Mother Mother explores the space between two people when grief turns everything we have come to know upside down, causing seismic shifts to happen, upending our world and everyone in it.

A full-length play with four key cast members and supporting cast. The fantastical elements of the play, the deities, the nymphs, and the baby were originally conceived using puppetry. They never speak, except for the distant murmurs and sounds we hear echoing around the stage when they appear. The work could easily be adapted to fit a modest space and budget through the use of projections, not puppets.

Just Stop!

Synopsis:

In this one-act play, we meet Adam, the (fictional) father of one of the Just Stop Oil activists found guilty of causing disruption by bringing the M25 to a standstill in November, 2022. Adam is a man grappling with a storm of confusion, anger, and bitterness in the wake of the arrests. He is faced with the challenging reality of his child’s choices and the decisions made by others involved that day. In the aftermath of these events, and amid a fervent national response, Adam immerses himself in the flow of media coverage. His perspective shifts dramatically when he experiences intense public animosity and hostility directed towards him. As time passes, Adam begins to unravel the intentions of the protestors. Through letters written by his child in prison, Adam rediscovers their deep connection and re-evaluates the events with newfound clarity and compassion.

Just Stop Oil was one of the most well-known, yet largely criticised activist groups in the UK. They have been called fanatics and selfish, with one former police inspector labelling them as an “evil cult.” Climate change is an urgent issue that continues to divide public opinion. Although the majority of Britons support progress, the debate threatens to further disunify our political parties, galvanising those who advocate for action, while alienating those who adopt a delay/denial stance. The play explores the often uncomfortable relationship between politics and our essential democratic right to protest in order to motivate support for change.
