My Plays
Cuckoo
Synopsis:
*Texas Fried Chicken, abject misery and a one-way Ryanair ticket. A fresh, modern look at what it means to be young in Ireland today.*
Everyone hates Iona. Everyone except Pingu. Fitting in is hard when one of you can’t shut up and your silent best friend wears a tuxedo to school every day. Sick of the ceaseless bullying and despair, Iona and Pingu decide to get the fuck out of Dublin.
Turns out that emigrating is a great way to get noticed by the cool kids. Loving the attention, Iona is drunk on her new-found popularity until she discovers she’s messed with the wrong crowd. In a world where reputation must be defended tooth and nail, this can only end in disaster for all involved.
From Kylie Jenner lip kits to Lucozade, this is a fresh, modern look at what it means to be young in Ireland today. Shortlisted for the Papatango New Writing Prize, Lisa Carroll’s sharp and sparkling debut dissects the true cost of belonging, and reflects on how hard it is to break away from the place you grew up.

Reviews:
Charlie Wilks, Broadway World ★★★★★
"This play is a raucous riot that never stops giving."
Lyn Gardner, Stagedoor
"Lisa Carroll’s play has been on the short and long lists of several writing awards and you can see why. There is both snap and crackle in the writing, she knows how to place a smart joke, but it is also terrific on the teenage insecurities that make friendship so treacherous, particularly in the digital age."
ActDrop ★★★★★
"Lisa Carroll's brilliantly written script - like many outstanding plays - incorporates a delicately well-judged blend of abundant humour carefully contrasted with intense drama, that includes some painfully moving moments."
The Misandrist
Synopsis:
A penetrating new comedy about the quest for true intimacy, sexual equality, and top-notch tupperware.
When “intimidating” Rachel and eternal “nice guy” Nick meet at a sticky-floored bar in Piccadilly, what was meant to be a one-night-stand becomes a sexual odyssey of self-discovery… and mutual destruction.
As they navigate their situationship, Rachel decides it’s time to TAKE BACK CONTROL. Can some playful, passionate pegging provide a pathway of discovery to new parts of themselves, and each other?

WhatsOnStage
“A no-holds-barred insight into contemporary relationships, laced with sharp lines and dark humour... a zeitgeisty play that shows great promise, and confirms Carroll as a writer to watch.”
Broadway World
“A witty dramedy that explores the contemporary search for intimacy... portrays male vulnerability exceptionally well... The writing is delightfully caustic and acerbic... precise, political, unforgiving... unceasingly entertaining”
Peter Bradshaw, Guardian Film Critic
“I am so glad I got to see The Misandrist at the Arcola Theatre with the entirely brilliant Elf Lyons and also brilliant Nicholas Armfield - a death metal relationship comedy by Lisa Carroll - like Patrick Marber’s Closer for a new generation.”
