About me
Jessi writes stories about women, queerness, rurality, matriarchal lineage, grief, migration, and belonging. She builds new worlds, enriches this one, and helps characters find strength they didn’t know they had. Her lived experience of the prison, care and class systems, disability, and growing up as a lesbian in the part of Texas where the Bible Belt meets Tornado Alley all lend to her artistic lens. Her favourite places are ones where lines between reality and more-than-reality blur. She has worked as a dramaturg for The Gate Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, and University College Oxford. She's worked as an Assistant Director for The Gate Theatre and Camden People's Theatre. She has edited feature films optioned by 3 Arts Entertainment and worked as a runner for a Netflix & Various Artists Limited writers room. She's currently got TV pilots with Various Artists Limited, Tall Story Pictures, and Brock Media. Her plays have been performed at Camden People's Theatre and Craftory Workshop. She's also been shortlisted for the Verity Bargate Award and won the Oberon Books Best Text for Performance Award. She lectures on Creative Writing for Performance and Dramaturgy at University College Oxford and Birkbeck, University of London. She has recently received Arts Council DYCP funding and Farnham Maltings Working Class Creative Funding.
