MAY DAY
Synopsis:
Set in the run up to the Repeal the 8th Referendum, two college friends talk through the hopes and tensions that are bubbling up to the surface.
On the 26th May 2018, the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution Act 1983 was an amendment made to the Constitution of Ireland which inserted a subsection recognizing the equal right to life of the pregnant woman and the unborn. The Repeal the 8th campaign fought for access to abortion in Ireland - access is still restricted in many areas of the country.
In 2017, Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor competed against the undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. in what was dubbed the ‘Money Fight’ - it was the second richest fight in boxing history. McGregor became a new icon for Irishness, a type of working-class hero – he had immense marketing power and influence. Violent incidents occurred outside of the ring too and McGregor faced charges in relation to assaults and driving offences.
Marriage Equality was passed into law years before the Repeal Referendum began. A referendum on 22 May 2015 amended the Constitution of Ireland to provide that marriage is recognised irrespective of the sex of the partners.
Produced at the King’s Head Theatre London (April 2023), The Lion & Unicorn Theatre London for Camden Fringe (July 2023) and the Dublin Fringe Festival (September 2023).
