About me

Áine is an Irish writer, theatre-maker and storyteller currently based in Scotland. She studied at Brighton, Sussex and R.A.D.A. and was Associate Director & Dramaturg for Otherplace, Brighton 2007-13 where her 2011 immersive mad-house production of Dracula won the Fringe Report Best Auteur Award (script, design & direction). Her adaptation and direction of Edward Bond’s anti-war play, Tuesday, won national acclaim, not least from Bond himself.
Áine was the first playwright in residence for the Orkney Children’s Theatre in 2016, creating Trowie Tales based on old folk stories. Commissions for the Scottish International Storytelling Festival include Off The Map, about courageous women, collaborating with trad musicians Karen Tweed and Jenny Wrigley and Hotel Caledonia with composer/musician Eric Linklater.
Aine’s screenplay Running Out was produced by BBC Scotland / National Theatre of Scotland as part of Scenes For Survival in 2020.
Much of her writing for stage is based on real life experiences of working-class people, particularly women. She has written about Invisible Disabilities, from her own experience. Bronagh & The Bum Goblin, an audio drama was produced by Birds Of Paradise Theatre Co / BBC Radio Scotland. Her stage works have been produced internationally, including The Southwark Playhouse, London, The Cork Arts Theatre, Ireland and the TEMU Festival and Mouths of Babe NC in the USA
Burning Bright won the David MacLennan Award 2022 and was staged at Óran Mor, Glasgow and The Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh in February/March 2023 directed by Roxana Haines.

Synopsis:

Commissioned by Birds Of Paradise, A totally bonkers comedy about invisible disability. Bronagh has 15 mins to get to her son's school concert, but she's stuck in a public wc with Chrons Disease...which she has brought to life as a 'goblin' living up her bum.
